P&G Recalls Two Lots of Prescription Renal Diet Cat Food due to a Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — CINCINNATI, July 25, 2010 – The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) (NYSE:PG), is voluntarily recalling two specific lots of its prescription renal dry cat food as a precautionary measure, as it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

This product is available by prescription through veterinary clinics throughout the U.S.

No illnesses have been reported. A FDA analysis identified a positive result on the lot codes listed above. Lot codes can be found in the lower right corner on the back of the bag.

Consumers who have purchased dry cat food with these codes should discard it. People handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. JUST A DOG

From time to time people tell me, “Lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or, “That’s a lot of money for just a dog.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, time spent, or costs involved for “Just a dog.” Some of my proudest moments have come about with “Just a dog.” Many hours have passed with my only company being “Just a dog.” and not once have I felt slighted. Some of my saddest moments were brought about by “Just a dog.” In those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “Just a dog” provided comfort and purpose to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it’s “Just a dog,” you will probably understand phrases like “Just a friend,” “Just a sunrise,” or “Just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of “Just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly into the future.
For me and folks like me, its not “Just a dog.” It’s an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.
I hope that someday people can understand it’s not “Just a dog.” It’s the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “Just a man or woman.”
So the next time you hear the phrase “Just a dog,” smile, because they “Just Don’t Understand.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 2, 2010 – United Pet Group, Cincinnati, Ohio is voluntarily expanding its recent recall of its Pro-Pet Adult Daily Vitamin Supplement tablets for Dogs to include additional pet nutritional supplement products for dogs and cats due to possible Salmonella contamination. The list of recalled products is provided below. The Food and Drug Administration is aware of this recall.

The recalled products are sold nationally at various retailers. The products include various United Pet Group Pro-Pet and Excel branded products for dogs and cats, and certain other private label brands of the same products. All of the affected products are in tablet and powdered form. These products are being removed from retail stores and consumers should immediately stop feeding these supplements to their pets. The affected products are those with expiration dates that include and are between "01/2013" and "06/2013." Products with expiration dates earlier than 01/2013 or later than 06/2013 are not included in this recall. The expiration date can be found imprinted vertically on the right side of the product label.

Laboratory testing has revealed that some lots of some of these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The company is recalling the additional products out of an abundance of caution.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. The DogSmith Makes Saving Pets’ Lives Its Business

The DogSmith Dog Training and Pet Care Franchise Company was founded on the principle of social responsibility through their Canine Rescue Resources Program for animal shelters and rescue groups.

The DogSmith business model would also ensure that affordable, convenient and hassle-free dog training and pet care would be available to pet owners. “In addition to the other resources we offer, we also provide free puppy classes to help owners get off to the best start possible with their new dog. It’s finally summer, but can all of the pretty flowers in bloom spell trouble for you and your kitty? Make sure to check all fresh and garden flowers to make sure that they are not dangerous — or deadly — for your pets.

There are hundreds of plants that may be poisonous, and even nonpoisonous plants can cause mild stomach upset if they are ingested in quantity. The following are some of the most dangerous plants that you should make sure to keep away from your pets.
Dangerous GardensLilies

Easter lilies (Lilium longiflorum), tiger lilies (Lilium tigrinum), rubrum lilies or Japanese showy lilies (Lilium speciosum and Lilium lancifolium), and various day lilies (genus Hemerocallis) are highly toxic to cats. These beautiful and colorful plants are grown as ornamental flowers and are commonly found in bouquets and flower arrangements. While the exact toxic component is unknown, cats appear to be the only species sensitive to its deadly effects. A cat licking or chewing on the plant may develop kidney failure that could be fatal. Even small ingestions, such as a few bites on a leaf or ingestion of pollen, can be deadly.
Rhododendron

Rhododendron species contain a toxic substance known as grayanotoxin. Grayanotoxins can be very dangerous if the plants containing it are ingested. This type of poison causes stomach upset, but it can also affect the heart rate and nervous system. As few as two leaves may cause dangerous toxicity. A common plant found in this family is the azalea, which is often used as an ornamental plant.
Plants That Contain Cardiac Glycoside

Cardiac glycoside is a poison; the most commonly recognized is digitalis, which is sometimes used in medication to treat cardiovascular disease in people and pets. Plants that contain this type of poison are highly toxic because they can cause life-threatening damage to the heart. Examples of these types of plants include oleander (Nerium oleander), lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria majalis), foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), certain milkweeds (Aesclepias spp.) and squill (Virginea maritime). All parts of plants that contain cardiac glycoside are toxic, and even small amounts can be deadly.
Castor Beans (Ricinus communis)

The castor bean plant is used as a decorative plant and as jewelry, and sometimes the oil (castor oil) from the plant is used medicinally. The toxic ingredient in this plant is ricin, which is one of the most potent toxins known to man. Castor bean seeds contain the highest concentration of ricin in the plant and are most commonly associated with poisoning. The beans must be crushed to release the toxin, but even small amounts of ricin can be fatal.
Cycad Palms (Cycas, Zamia)

These ornamental plants are found naturally in areas of sandy soil, like in Texas, Florida and California. This plant is also becoming a popular bonsai-style houseplant. Cycasin is the toxic component of this plant. Cycasin is found throughout the plant, although it is more concentrated in the seeds. This toxin can cause severe liver failure if it is ingested by a cat. Ingestion of one or more seeds has resulted in severe symptoms and even death in pets.
Yews, Taxus Genus

Many types of yew bushes are used in landscaping, and they also grow naturally. The toxic ingredient in these bushes is taxane. Most cases of poisoning from yew bushes typically result from trimmings fed to grazing animals; however, a bored cat may chew on the bush. In cattle, horses, and goats, the toxic ingredient results in heart failure and sudden death. In dogs and possibly in cats, the animal usually experiences seizures following its ingestion.
